Some Good Pandemic News From Dr. Fauci

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been one of the leading voices during the United States response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. For the past two and a half years he has been a voice of calm and honesty about what we should expect and when we should expect things to happen as it related to COVID-19.

Today, there are many questions that still exist as it relates to the pandemic, even as much of life is starting to feel like it is returning to normal throughout our state and country. It is with this in mind that we continue to hear from Dr. Fauci about the U.S. plans for the continued pandemic response and where he sees the country in the state of the pandemic today.

For this reason, we took particular note when he was interviewed for PBS Newshour and he made the statement that the U.S. was “out of the pandemic phase.” It is important to not only hear that incredibly encouraging phrasing from Dr. Fauci, but to also look at the facts that are surrounding this quote and what it may mean as globally the pandemic is still very much alive and raging in certain parts of the country.

One reason that Dr. Fauci cites for the U.S. being out of the pandemic phase is the number of people in this country who have received a full dose of vaccines. In fact, currently, there are 66% of the total U.S. population fully vaccinated and about half of those individuals have received booster shots. This is an encouraging number. Add that to the immunity that many have gotten to the virus due to being infected and Dr. Fauci surmises that we are in a good place currently with the pandemic.

Another reason for hope is that while infections are trending upward, hospitalizations are not and this is a good sign. That means that serious infections are not happening at nearly the rate they were happening when the Delta variant of the virus was the predominant variant in the U.S.

One word of caution that Dr. Fauci strikes is that cases may be undercounted because people are now testing at home and not reporting these infections to authorities and therefore there may be many more infections that are not being reported and the number of cases may be much higher then official numbers state.

Nevertheless, Dr. Fauci’s words to PBS are welcome news for all of us who are fatigued from the COVID-19 pandemic and anxious to get back to a sense of normalcy.
