While in may ways things have returned back to normal here in the state of Connecticut, today is a grim reminder that the rest of the country and the rest of the world are still very much not back to normal. The Biden Administration has put into place new travel restrictions for any international travelers who are intending to come to the United States regardless of their vaccination status or citizenship.

The new rules which take affect today require that anyone traveling to the United States from any country must present a negative COVID test taken within the last 24-hours. The stricter restrictions have tightened up from the previous requirement of taking a COVID test 72 hours ahead of any travel into the United States. With the increased concern over the Omicron variant public health officials believe this new testing window will give them a better chance at catching these new types of infections before they arrive on our shores.

Two groups of people in particular should keep these new restrictions in mind;

  1. If you have family in another part of the world that are planning to fly in to see you during the holidays, you will need to reach out to them and make sure they have a plan to get tested so they are not slowed down on their arrival for the holidays.
  2. If you are planning to visit someone outside of the U.S. for the holidays you should make yourself aware of any restrictions that the country you are traveling to have and also be sure to be aware of this new restriction for reentry into the United States so you don’t have any issues on your return home.

The best defense you have against serious illness is to get vaccinated and then once you are fully vaccinated get a booster shot when it is your turn to do so. Vaccinations are the single best defense against the COVID-19 virus and they give you the best chance of avoiding a hospital stay if you do get infected.

Be safe this holiday season and enjoy your travel, just make sure you know all of the restrictions that may be in place when you are traveling.
