Three Reasons A Good Night Sleep Is Good For Your Overall HealthAugust 3, 2022 4:20 pm
You probably heard it all the time growing up from your parents, get a good night sleep, it’s good for you. Did you ever stop to wonder why it’s good for you? Of course there are the psychological reasons for getting a good night sleep including being more alert, having less irritability and experiencing lower levels of stress. However, mental health is not the only thing that can be improved by getting a good night sleep. Your physical health, especially over time, can be greatly improved by getting more than 7 hours of sleep a night.
Here are three reasons getting a good night sleep is beneficial to your overall physical health;
1.) Body recovery. Whether you work out intensely or just go about your day without any exercise your body needs time to recover from your day’s activities. This is where sleep comes in. Getting a good night sleep is one of the best ways you can help your body heal. While you sleep your body works to restore damaged tissue by releasing hormones and proteins. This process is sped up as you sleep.
2.) Battling illness. You wouldn’t think that sleeping is one of your best defenses against illness, but it most certainly is and studies have shown that while you are asleep cytokines, proteins that direct your immune system to battle inflammation, are released. If you’re not getting enough sleep the battle against inflammation will not be as strong and effective.
3.) Brain health. Your brain does not retain what you’ve learned throughout the day if it is not getting well rested. Therefore, if you want to have a strong and reliable memory, sleep is critical to that goal. As mentioned above, sleep also helps your brain regulate emotions and leads to less mood swings and irritability.
If you’ve been told your whole life that you need to get more sleep, you probably do. While too much sleep can be damaging to your mental health, getting between 7-8 hours a night for an adult is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Pair a good night sleep with exercise and eating right and you’ll be on a path to health and happiness in no time.
