June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and you can go purple to support the cause. Most importantly though is to know the early signs of the disease so if you or your loved one begin experiencing them you can get the help that you need.
It may be tricky to get a good read on the early signs of this disease because they can be similar (but are NOT the same) as the signs of getting older. Look our for sudden changes in the behaviors listed below as a sign that something different then just aging is happening.
- Memory loss: While memory loss can occur in most aging adults, when it starts to impact ones daily life that is when it can be concerning.
- Difficulty planning: If your loved one is all of a sudden have a hard time making plans with you or their friends, you may want to seek medical care.
- Mixing up where they are or what time/day it is: When you are with your loved one do they forget where they are or what day it is? This could be an early sign that something more then just aging is occurring.
- Unusual difficulty with speaking or writing: There are those of us who have trouble with certain words or phrases when speaking or writing but if new issues arise as one gets older this can be cause for concern.
