Be Aware Of These Signs Of Autism

One of the most exciting times in our lives is when we bring home a new baby from the hospital and begin to start to see them grow. What happens though when he/she is not as expressive as most babies or does not babble talk when they are supposed to? Should you worry?

The most important thing you can do is to be aware of your child’s behaviors and if you suspect something to be a little out of the ordinary, get a professional evaluation. The tricky thing in diagnosing autism is that some of the behaviors (or lack of behaviors) that children with autism will demonstrate are also common in children who do not have the disorder. A professional evaluation is the only sure way to know whether your child may need intervention.

With that being said, here are some signs to look for in your child early on;

  • little or no eye-contact
  • no repetition of sounds that are being spoken to him/her
  • few or no smiles

The Autism Speaks website has a wonderful section where you can view what to look for by the age of your child, this way you’ll be able to tell what is developmentally appropriate and what may be a sign to learn more about.
