What Is Dehydration? And Why You Need To Be Aware Of It

Dehydration happens when your body loses too much water without replacing it, which prevents your body from performing its normal functions. It can also impact emotions and performance, whether at work or athletic, because when our body feels tired, we lack energy. The interference that comes from dehydration  can stress our organs and, in some cases, cause illnesses, fatigue and more. Being in a hot climate and enduring physical activity can deplete our body’s fluids, which makes drinking plenty of water essential in warmer climates, especially during the hot summer months, as well as before, during and after exercising.

Hot climates and exercise are probably the most common factors of dehydration but there’s plenty of other causes:

  • Sweating: Whether you’re sweating from exercise, being outside in hot weather, or being sick with a fever, it causes your body to lose its fluids.
  • Diarrhea: When you consume something that doesn’t agree with you or catch a virus, diarrhea can cause you to become extremely dehydrated. You lose minerals, electrolytes and a tremendous amount of water when you are suffering from diarrhea that prevents your intestinal tract from absorbing water from the food.
  • Vomiting: Influenced by various illnesses, vomiting is a major cause of dehydration, as your body is losing a lot of water.

People who are experience illnesses, whether a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea should be given plenty of water to replenish the fluids that were lost. This will lessen the chance of becoming dehydrated.

Signs of Dehydration

Being thirsty isn’t the only reliable way to tell if your body is dehydrated and in need of water. In fact, many people don’t experience thirst until after they are dehydrated.  Below are some signs to look out for:

  • Lethargic and foggy brained
  • Dizzy or light-headed
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Urine is dark yellow
  • Thirsty
  • Mouth and/or skin is dry
  • Craving snacks and sugar

Although the above symptoms are caused by a variety of things, even mild dehydration can negatively affect your mental and physical health. In addition, as age increases, so does our chances of becoming dehydrated.

In addition to drinking plenty of water, you can consume foods like cucumbers and broccoli that are high in water. Over hydrating is also not healthy for your body. You can tell if you are properly hydrated by the color of your urine; it should be a pale yellow.
